The company and the terroir

The wines produced by La Torretta Winery are born from the meeting and fusion of Fulvio Rapanà’s visionary passion with the professional talent of Massimo Tripaldi, a well-known oenologist and Vice President of the Italian Oenologists’ Association.

A family connection to winemaking is also part of this story: Fulvio’s great-grandfather, Luigi Grasso, known as “Lu Cìci Grasso” – pictured with his wife and daughter in the old photograph – was a respected wine producer in Campi Salentina at the turn of the 20th century.

Passion and skill come together to create wines that express their terroir: the strength and richness of the Salento sun and red soil, combined with traditional winemaking techniques that were at risk of being lost, but which have always enhanced the aromas and flavors of the wines.

The vineyards are located between the towns of Manduria, Guagnano, Lizzano, and Torricella, close to the areas traditionally known for Primitivo and Negroamaro, and just a few kilometers from the sea. This setting embodies the idea of a viticulture with its head in the sun and its feet in the blue Ionian Sea, reflected in the historic Torre Zozzoli, a 15th-century coastal watchtower that gives the winery its name and identity.

The scirocco wind blows through the vineyards most days of the year, carrying with it the flavors and salinity of the Ionian Sea, helping to create wines with extraordinary character.

Thanks to these special climatic conditions, La Torretta produces wines from both Primitivo grapes (Miti) and Negroamaro grapes (Nickè and Fuè): powerful yet elegant, full-bodied yet with soft tannins, never aggressive on the nose or palate.

With strict selection in the vineyards (22–25 quintals per hectare) and artisanal winemaking techniques, La Torretta has a niche production, limited to a maximum of 25,000 bottles per year..
